Big update to critical injuries
The critical injury cards have been the longest standing, bare bones place holder mechanic in the game I think. Having consisted of 3-4 possible critical injuries per body part for about 5 years now, for a total of 15 cards. I finally took the time, and decided that I was going to write 10 different possible critical injuries for each body part (big mistake, as it started getting really difficult after 7-8 to come up with new ones, but I was determined). After spending some sleepless nights, studying anatomy, trauma, and how to convert it best in to a simple representation that works within the game mechanics, then writing the rules and adding some flavour text, I finally managed to finish 10 possible critical injuries for each body part, for a total of 40 different cards.
Now, whenever a player gets critically hit in Empyre, they get to draw a card from a chunk of 10 possible injury cards for that body part, which looks and feels way better than holding up as little as 3 possible cards to pick from.
The injuries range from anything mild (dislocated shoulder, flesh wound to the foot causing you to lose balance, etc) to severe (having your heart punctured, having your frontal lobe smashed, having limbs outright destroyed), finally adding the level of depth, danger and suspense to combat that critical hits were always supposed to.
The cards being updated also made it necessary to make some changes to the description of critical injuries in the Core Book, that section now explains what the following wording that is present on each critical card means:
Bleed
Immediate injury
Long term injury
Surgery difficulty
Full recovery time after surgery
As long as players read this short section in the Core Book, there will be no confusion about critical cards.
Furthermore, I added some tips on the title page of the Core Book on how to view the book in its proper format, as I doubt everyone reads the full description of the game on itch, and will miss the disclaimer at the bottom that all files should be opened in Google Docs, hopefully helping people have a more pleasant experience going through the books/documents.
